All About Family Dentistry Dentures and Partials

Dentures and partials are artificial teeth crafted for individuals to replace missing or damaged teeth. The primary purpose of dentures and partials is to restore oral health and function and to alleviate pain caused by damaged, cracked, or decaying teeth. Dentures come in a variety of styles, including temporary, permanent, removable, or fixed. You will be able to discuss with your dentist what style will work best for your situation and lifestyle.

Types of Dentures

There are approximately five different types of dentures that affect how long they are meant to be in the mouth and what the creation and application procedure will be like.

  • Removable or Fixed: Removable dentures are models that can be taken out at the end of the day to sleep, while fixed dentures are “installed” in the mouth and meant not to be removed. Fixed dentures are frequently connected directly to the jawbone to ensure they remain in place for many years.
  • Complete or Partial: Complete dentures are designed to fit in a mouth where there are no more natural teeth remaining, while partials will rest in a small area where multiple teeth are gone. Partials are more common because people are prone to losing a couple of teeth over time, but not all.
  • Immediate: Immediate dentures are a temporary solution while more permanent models are made over a period of 8-12 weeks. This period of time is meant to allow the jaw to adjust to the missing teeth and shift to its final shape.

How to Get Dentures

The process of acquiring dentures will require multiple visits to the same dentist. The first step is an oral exam, where the dentist speaks with you and examines your teeth to see what kind of denture is required. A mold of the upper and lower jaw is created, and any teeth that need to be extracted will be. While the mouth heals, you will be given temporary dentures until the full set is complete.
